Practice Self Care!

We’re about to hit the busiest time of the year. Don’t panic, just look after yourself.

You can tackle this time of year with self-care, both physically and mentally. Yes, there’s the entertaining, going out, and all the preparations, but know you’ve got this and you even can enlist the help of West Niagara Chiropractic Clinic and their team to help with your December wellness. Self-care is defined by the World Health Organization as the ability of individuals, families, and communities to promote health, prevent disease, maintain health, and cope with illness and disability with or without a healthcare provider.

Why is self-care important?

 1.  Manages stress.

 2.  Makes you more aware of yourself.

 3. Improves physical and mental health.

 4.  Help your relationships.

Self-care is very important this time of year because we’re busier and it’s the start of the SAD, Seasonal affective disorder, time of year. You may not be aware that the shorter hours of daylight and cooler weather may play a role in your overall health.

December Self-care tips:

 1.  Eat well. It’s easy to fall into the fast food trap because you’re pressed for time and it’s easy to overindulge in social gatherings.

 2.  Get outside. Fresh air and natural light can improve your mood. Plus, a walk will count as a little exercise.

 3.  Exercise. Regular exercise will help reduce anxiety. There are plenty of online classes you can take if you’re not a member of a gym.

 4.  Limit your screen time. Whether it be television, tablet, or your phone. Be mindful of this when your head hits the pillow.

 5.  Stay on a sleep schedule. Getting enough sleep at the proper time is important to combat stress. Remember, limit screen time.

 6.  Limit alcohol intake. An occasional drink is fine but overindulging can affect your sleep, eating habits, and mood.

 7.  Take some time for YOU. Enjoy the company of a good friend, go to the movies, or do an activity you enjoy.

These are just a few ideas to help you navigate this busy time. You need to think and take of your well-being now. The practice of self-care should take place all year long but it seems to come to the forefront leading up to the holidays. A visit to West Niagara Chiropractic and Wellness Centre should be an important part of your self-care toolbox. Adequate rest also plays a significant role in mental health, helping to improve concentration, mood, and cognitive function. Without sufficient rest, individuals are more susceptible to stress, anxiety, and a weakened immune system.
