Surviving the Holiday Pain: A Chiropractor's Guide

Dorcus Srivaram • December 13, 2023

The holidays are a time to enjoy good food, good company, and good cheer. However, the season is often filled with stress, long hours of travel, and lack of sleep. For those of us with chronic pain or mobility issues, the holidays can be a tough time.

As a chiropractor, I've seen many patients come in with holiday-related injuries or increased pain levels. But don't worry, there are ways you can prepare your body for the holiday season so you can enjoy it to the fullest! Here are some tips from a chiropractor’s point of view on how to survive the holidays.

5 tips to Survive the Holiday Pains from Chiropractors

1. Maintain a regular exercise routine

During the holidays, it's easy to get lazy and skip your regular exercise routine. However, exercising regularly can your body strong and healthy.  Strengthening your muscles can help protect against injury and give you more energy for the day. Consider going for a brisk walk each day or doing some light yoga in the morning. These simple activities can help reduce stress, improve your mobility, and keep your muscles loose and flexible. So, keep up that routine!

2. Be careful with your movements

During the holiday season, many people tend to drain themselves, which can lead to injuries or awaken existing pain. If you have chronic pain, be extra careful and stick to low-impact activities. If lifting heavy items is part of your routine, be sure to lift with proper form and take frequent breaks. Be mindful of your movements and take breaks as needed.

Use proper lifting technique when carrying heavy bags or presents. To avoid repetitive stress injuries, switch between different activities often and avoid sitting or standing for long periods. If you have any strong or ongoing pains when you move, it's important to see a chiropractor quickly. They will check and treat you accordingly. Remember, your health and well-being should always be a priority!

3. Get enough sleep

It's easier said than done, but getting enough sleep is crucial, especially during the holiday season. Make sure you get at least 7-8 hours of sleep every night. A good night's rest will help recharge your mind and body so that you can stay alert and energized throughout the day. Plus, an adequate amount of sleep can also have a positive impact on your mood and overall outlook on life! So take this opportunity to catch up on some much-needed rest. Your body will thank you for it.

Our bodies use this time to heal and rebuild tissues; when we don't get enough sleep, it can impair our immune system. Aim for at least 7 hours of sleep a night or follow the general rule of getting at least eight hours for optimal health.

4. Stay hydrated:

Drinking enough water is important all year round, but especially during the holiday season. Holiday beverages like eggnog and alcohol can be dehydrating.  So make sure to keep up with your water intake by carrying a reusable water bottle around or setting reminders throughout the day. Drink plenty of water throughout the day to help flush out toxins in the body, keep the joints lubricated, and protect the spine's health. So don't forget to fill up your glass!

5. Schedule regular chiropractic visits

Regular chiropractic care can keep your body functioning at its best, both during the holidays and year-round. It can help alleviate pain, improve mobility, and boost your overall well-being.  A chiropractor can also advise you on stretches or exercises that can help improve your posture and strength. Scheduling an appointment before the holidays is a great way to ensure your body is prepared for the season.

While the holiday season can be stressful and physically challenging, it doesn't be a pain in the neck (or back!). Incorporating these simple steps into your routine can help you prepare your body for the holidays and enjoy them to the fullest. The first heavy snowfall of the season brings a certain kind of quiet beauty. But it also brings the chore many of us dread: shovelling. While it might seem like just another task, shovelling is a strenuous physical activity. Rushing out into the cold without preparing your body is a recipe for injury. A few minutes of warming up can make all the difference between a clear driveway and a painful trip to the doctor.

Slouching over a desk or phone is a common habit, but it can lead to more than just a temporarily sore neck. Poor posture contributes to back pain, muscle imbalances, and even reduced lung capacity over time. While you might try to consciously sit up straight, a more lasting solution lies in building the physical foundation for good posture. Strength training is a powerful tool that can help you stand taller, move better, and feel stronger.

Have you ever stopped to think about how you walk? This seemingly simple, automatic action is known as your gait. It's your personal pattern of movement when you walk or run. While you may not give it much thought, your gait is a complex process involving your brain, spinal cord, nerves, muscles, and bones, all working in harmony.
